My friend Srinivasan introduced me to Daniel Kumaran during his visit to Chennai a couple of months ago. I learnt that Kumaran and his wife Jeyanthy worked in rural Pudukkottai (7 hours from Chennai, and 1 hour from Trichy) through their organisation "Venture Trust" fighting child labour, promoting organic farming and small village industries through women's groups, etc. It seemed like any other NGO receiving foreign grants, living comfortably doing some work here and there. Kumaran had come with his son Jeeva, who wanted to join an engineering college after graduating from school. Kumaran was very unhappy about his son's decision "Don't you think you have had enough of school? Why don't you come and work with me instead of wasting some more precious years of your life?" The only other father I had known was glad that his sons stopped school was the school headmaster - turned organic farmer Gomathinayakam from Puliangudi in Thirunelveli. When I had met him on his farm two years ago, he had said "The day when my two sons decided that they would stop going to school after their 10th standard was the happiest day of my life. Because I knew then their lives were saved." Kumaran was the second such father I had met. I joined my friend Srinivasan, also a passionate deschooler, and tried to convince Jeeva to not join college. He finally joined a five-year programme in homeopathy. Kumaran was not unhappy. I really liked Kumaran because he was calm and had a beautiful energy about him. We had long hours of talk about yoga, meditation, local knowledge systems, spirituality, miracles of yogis and siddhas, tantra. Jeeva was energetic and cheerful and constantly amazed me with his knowledge of plants, animals, farming, medicinal herbs, actually almost everything about the countryside. Kumaran had been asking me since then to go visit his family and his work in Pudukkottai. He needed some help with documentation. Quite tired of traveling, I had just then decided to ground myself in one place - Chennai - and do some focused work. I kept postponing my visit for about two months, while Kumaran kept persistently calling me. Last week, I decided to go there with Srinivasan for not more than two days. My first day there was spent in acquanting with his cheerful and loving wife Jeyanthy, their 13-year old daughter Jenny (named after the wife of Marx, during Kumaran's communist days). Jenny came across as an amazingly mature girl. She sat with us and comfortably participated in discussions on serious topics offering insightful comments, was quite non-judgemental for her age (she would disapprove of any of us talking about anyone in their absence) and was gifted with some healing powers, which she was further developing. She was very 'notorious' in her school for 'disobeying her teachers' by questioning or challenging her school curriculum. She wouldn't even care for her exam scores. That impressed me the most! I met the staff of Venture Trust. They were all like one big, loving family and I immediately connected to the place and people. I did some work for them that day. Their approach is unique. From the day they enter a village, they plan and work towards the villagers driving them out saying "We can take care of ourselves". They achieved this by helping form men's sanghas, women's sanghas, children's clubs and youth clubs, who after taking care of all the major problems in their village and gaining sufficient confidence, would adopt a neighbouring village and help form similar groups. So far 12 villages have adopted 24 new villages (two villages each). They were doing some important work rescuing children from bonded and slave labour in factories. They had declared 12 villages as child labour-free. But the uncomfortable part for me was that they were put in schools instead. The rest of the 'Venture Trust' picture -- with local knowledge, organic farming, healthy work culture, afforestation, promoting village industries and their approach -- seemed quite perfect. On the second day, Jenny was getting ready to go to school. Srinivasan asked her "Why do you want to go to school? What do you get out of it?" She said "I love the 'meeting friends' part of going to school, not the 'lessons-examination'. He asked her "Is that enough reason to be part of such a violent system? You can find/make friends wherever you go, can't you?" I got interested in the 'potentiality' of the conversation and joined them. Kumaran got interested too and joined. Jenny did not have any convincing reason to give Srinivasan for why she could not stop going to school. Kumaran quoted J.Krishnamurthy "Modern education makes the diamond (meaning Jenny) blunt and dull". She truly was like one - strong, bright and sharp. Her mother joined the conference next. Jenny listened intently as each of us gave her our bit of advice, quoting deschoolers, narrating inspiring stories from Kamiriithu. She was going through her own introspection. After sometime, she delcared "Okay, I am not going to school from today. I certainly feel more confident with so many of you supporters around". It was a very intense moment for the whole family. She agreed to write her story for Kamiriitu. I finally decided to ask Kumaran "Everything looks good in the picture now. Except for the children in the villages who are being put in schools." He answered that that was the best they had been able to do given their resource constraints. I suggested that they start their own model school, where the children would be free and do some meaningful learning, and inspire the villagers to start more such learning centres. He liked the idea and called Dakshinamoorthy, coordinator of their 'organic farming' programme who had been doing some administration work inside. He had had some experience with running an alternative school we were told. Dakshinamoorthy started narrating his experience. "I have always been very interested in child psycology and saw schooling as being very violent on the children. So, I decided to start my own experimental school in my village. I had 30 children 3-5 years old and ran it for a year. I keenly observed children's behaviour, how they interacted with each other, how they learned, etc. I love doing that. The children had no schedule or curriculum. They were never told when to do what. Children who were bored of playing would come to me and listen to stories, learn reading and writing. We made visits to farm, the woods and waterbodies nearby, where they would observe wildlife, explore or simply play." Dakshnimaoorthy went on for a long time about the school and his ideas, what he did, what the children did. He said "Because I had not told the children that learning reading and writing was compulsory, they ended up learning much more by the end of the year than I had thought they would." He couldn't continue the school because of financial constraints. He took up a job in a regular school and did not last long because he felt stifled by the system. So, he went on to running a DTP centre for some time after which he joined Venture. I was truly inspired by his story and was waiting for him to finish so I could ask him "Have you heard of John Holt, the American pioneer of the Homeschooling Movement? Your ideas sound very similar to his." Dakshinamoorthy jumped at it and said "Yes, of course. I have read all his books. I am a voracious reader. I read about him in a booklet put out by TNSF (Tamil Nadu Science Forum) and liked his ideas. So, I requested an Norwegian visitor to my village to mail me all his books." I said "Kumaran anna, what are you doing with someone like this sitting in your organisation doing administrative work? What more do you need to start your model school?" Dakshinamoorthy agreed "This would be my dream come true." Kumaran said "Okay, let's all drive to our 4.5 acre farm a few kilometres away, where we are carrying out many experiments in organic farming. We can have our school right there." And so, we drove to the farm, at whose entrance hung a board with the name of the farm and said "affiliated to Multiversity". A great beginning indeed! Kumaran showed us the place where we could build the school. It was a one-acre land right next to the road and easily accessible. He immediately instructed the farm worker to plant a banyan tree there. Kumaran showed another 8 acres of barren land nearby which the owner had agreed to sell for 2.5 lakhs. We all agreed that it would be good to acquire it as soon as possible. "We will make the decision and put it out to the universe, and it will happen." Kumaran strongly believes in the power of good intent. So do I. We then proceeded further inside to the model farm, where I found many interesting patches on which experiments using panchakavyam, different methods of intercropping, mulching and irrigation were being carried out. There were a few thatched structures for vermicomposting, to store traditional seeds and processed food and some other vacant space. Kumaran said they lived in the house in the town only because it was closer to Jenny's school. He turned around and asked his wife and daughter "So, shall we move in here?" They agreed. The next exercise was looking around to see which of the structures they could stay in. Dakshinamoorthy agreed to move in with his wife. Kumaran said he'd get a family to stay there and take care of the kitchen. Then there was a mention of a few more women who had been wanting to stay and work in the farm processing food. Kumaran said "That would be a small community living and working off the farm! It has always been my dream to start a commune like this along with a place for children. It is all coming true today. Sangeetha, would you like to join us in building this community?" It certainly was and is very tempting, especially because I have fallen in love with the place and the people. We got back to their house and sat down for our second round of dicussion. We pulled out a large sheet of paper and started our visioning exercise. "No curriculum, examinations or certificates. Those children who want to pursue college education can write open school examinations. A residential school for the older children rescued from factories. A day school for the younger ones. No closed structures other than the office room and the room to store important materials like books. Lots of fun." It was amazing how all our ideas matched to the last detail. And so it went on for a long time. Believe me, it rarely happens that everyone in a group thinks alike! And we came up with a rough yearly (including construction) of Rs.7 lakhs. We were somehow going to raise it. After a week: The family is already planning their move to the farm. Which thatched shed is the question now. Jenny has started exploring internship possibilities with interesting groups involved in various activities outside Pudukkottai. And it has been decided to start the school on January 14 (Pongal). We are all committed to do what it takes to get it going. - Sangeetha
