MONEY . . . MONEY is one of man's greatest and most important inventions, without which civilised society would be unthinkable. Most of what we do is either for or with money. MONEY doesn't only make the world go round, it also determines the way things are and where we are heading. If our own children's future is under threat because we are plundering our planet's natural resources and disrupting its climate and life-supporting ecosystems, it is because MONEY is being made, spent and invested doing so. Money has been with us since ancient times, but we have not yet learned - or shown much interest in learning - how to use it responsibly. Instead, a fine art has been made of its irresponsible use for personal and corporate material gain. Its misuse is in fact an integral and perfectly legal part of our society and economy. It is what we have all grown up with and are used to, so we accept it as being perfectly normal, because that is what it is - another example of the insanity of normality. Misuse of money is central to the problem of achieving sustainability. Only by learning to use money wisely and responsibly will we we able to create a sustainable economy and society and save our civilisation from the disaster towards which it is heading. It is not only the rich, banks or big business which use money irresponsibly. We all do it. If not directly, then indirectly, when we hand over responsibility for its use to others. We buy products and services without knowing how they were produced or provided; we save or invest our money, so that it will work for us, without knowing how it will do so. Yet with every pound, euro or dollar or rupees that we spend or invest, directly or indirectly we are contributing to making the world the way it is (and will be in future), by promoting a particular kind of economic activity which, more often than not, is inimical to the creation of a fair, humane and sustainable society, as well as being a threat to the future of our own children and coming generations. Whether an individual or a company, your success is measured, not in the good you are contributing to society, but in how much money you make, with little or no consideration of any long-term harm it may cause. If you think about it you will realise that this is quite insane, but it the principle on which virtually all economic activity is based. At the moment we seem to be getting away with it, but in fact our entire economy and the civilisation it supports are built on sand. No matter how high and mighty we have constructed it, or how good and admirable much of the superstructure may be, with such a foundation, it is inherently non-sustainable and must come tumbling down - which it will start to do much sooner than many people think. MONEY is not the cause of ALL our problems, but it plays a central role in most of them. Although, it is not money itself that is the problem, but the way in which it is used, or rather, misused. MONEY is not everything - any more than air or water are - but we cannot live without it. In modern society everyone needs a certain amount of money to survive, just as we need air and water; yet in contrast to these, it seems, we can never have enough money. That is because money has very special, in a sense magical, properties. Although worthless in itself, it can be exchanged for almost anything (including air and water). Money can even be used to create more money (if you have enough, you can "invest" it and simply live off the proceeds). We depend on it for our most vital and basic needs, but the same money is also used to satisfy some people's most extravagant and unnecessary whims and wants. Even after satisfying all our own needs and wants - which may be modest - there are still those of our family and friends, and even strangers, who it would be nice to help. Then there are all the worthy people and causes one could support, whether for genuinely altruistic reasons, for the sense of power it gives, or for the respect, praise, love, appreciation, etc. that generosity will buy for us. MONEY not only satisfies our material needs (and wants), but also many of our psychological and social needs (and wants) as well. It largely determines our status amongst family, friends and acquaintances, as well as in society at large. Money may not buy you "real" love, but if you are generous with it, it will buy you something very similar. MONEY is the most versatile form of power. If we have enough it gives us the illusion of being independent of others, since are able to take (buy) from society whatever we need or want. We can buy other people's time and skills. Slavery was abolished only when the rich and powerful realised that paying someone for their services instead was not just a more moral, but also a more effective, way of getting what they wanted. Most of us feel and fear our dependency on others (society), and seek security, power and "independence" in the possession of MONEY. This is the way things are - have always been - and few think to question it, but it has had and continues to have a terribly corrupting effect on our relationships with both our social and our natural environment. It is because making money rather than a valuable contribution to society is the central tenet of our economy that the tobacco industry, to take just one salient example, continues to spend billions of dollars promoting the image and sales of its pernicious products, despite the terrible harm they are now known to do to human health and life-expectancy. In sane, Sustainable Society, the FIRST concern of individuals and companies will be not to make money, but a valuable contribution to society. Money will have an essential role to play, but the rules for its use will be based on enlightened self-interest and our higher, more spiritual nature, rather than on the short-sighted, materialistic self-interest of our lower, more animal than human nature, which is now threatening the survival of our species. In contrast to the present situation, in which everyone is "free" to take as much from society as they can (legally) get, with little or no regard to what they contribute in return (and are admired for it), in the sustainable society that I have in mind, everyone will be expected to contribute to the "common wealth", and to take no more than a fair and proportionate share in return. If this sounds suspiciously like SOCIALISM, it's because that is perhaps what it is, only not the kind that proved such a failure and disappointment in the past, which one way or another was always imposed or dispensed from above. The SOCIALISM I have in mind is of the voluntary participatory, grass-roots variety. The relative importance of the things we depend on changes both with circumstances and their availability. Nothing is more important to us than the air we breath. If our supply is cut off, it immediately becomes ALL that is important. We can manage without water for much longer – but its absence becomes increasingly important, until eventually it becomes ALL that is important. It is the same with MONEY (i.e. the essential things it buys). Although with MONEY the situation is blurred and complicated, because it provides us with so many different needs, many of which are not clear cut. We all need cloths and accommodation, for example (and in Winter would die without them), but while one person lives in a palace with wardrobes full of the finest cloths, another manages to survive in a shack with just rags to wrap themselves in. MONEY has alienated us from the purpose and consequences of much of what we do, and from the people we do it for (including ourselves). Economists know this, but consider it the price we must pay for a modern, efficient economy. True or not, the price is much too high. Economic necessity and accepted attitudes not only facilitate but demand the misuse of money. The emergence of ethical investment funds is a step in the right direction, but needs to be taken much further. Comprehensive personal and corporate responsibility and accountability for how money is made, spent and invested (whether it is contributing to humane, just, sustainable economy or not,) will be fundamental to Sustainable Society. The present situation, in which making money rather than a valuable contribution to society is the primary concern, has a big advantage: it avoids arguments about what constitutes a valuable contribution to society and what the return (payment) for it should be. Within the law, everyone is free to do as they please and make as much money as they can (with no limit to the number of straw they may place on the camel's back). It is a freedom that many will be reluctant to give up (especially those attached to extravagant lifestyles and/or who contribute little of real value to society), but those who recognise where their real, enlightened self-interests lie, will want to do so - perhaps not immediately or all in one go, but soon making a start, and then bit by bit until the goal (Sustainable Society) has been achieved. It is natural (primitive rather than higher) human behaviour to want to maintain, and if possible improve our position in the social and economic hierarchy. In modern society it is mainly MONEY that provides the means. In this context it is interesting to observe the behaviour of our closest relatives in the animal kingdom, the anthropoid apes. In a field experiment, the dominant male of a group of anthropoid apes will take possession of and jealously guard a large bunch of bananas placed in his territory by an experimenter - far more than he can possibly eat himself (the ape, not the experimenter) -, which he will then hand out as rewards to other member of his group as a means of exerting power over them. Human behaviour is strikingly similar. Not surprisingly, since we are closely related. We are genetically programmed and behaviourally conditioned to accept or struggle for (depending on circumstances) our place in the social hierarchy. However, we have the potential to rise above our animal nature, the acquisition of which is symbolically described in the biblical story of Adam and Eve and interpreted in Abrahamic religions (Judaism, Christianity and Islam) as "The Fall of Man". Only in my view, it was not a Fall at all, but a quantum leap forward, towards (self)-awareness (". . . the eyes of both of them were opened and they discovered that they were naked"). Unfortunately, the ancient author of Genesis had God (i.e. his concept of him) curse man for taking his first step away from his instinctive, animal nature towards higher (divine) human nature ("The man has become like one of us, knowing good and evil . . ."). Not withstanding all the positive aspects of Christianity, western civilisation has developed in an atmosphere fundamentally hostile to the human condition, nurturing guilt and remorse for the very thing - (self)-awareness and the desire for knowledge - that makes us human. A more enlightened (concept of) God would not have cursed Adam and Eve, but praised Eve for her spirit and courage (in contrast to her spineless husband, who instead of sticking up for her when God found out what had happened, gave her the blame). Then, instead of addressing their primitive, animal nature and trying to coerce them into obedience with threats of punishment and offers of reward, he would have addressed their newly acquired higher nature, speaking to them as potential equals and offering them sound advice on how to proceed on the difficult path ahead. Above all, he would have pointed out the importance of them taking responsibility for the consequences of what do (see An Atheist's and Agnostic's Guide to God). On the other hand, maybe initially Adam and Eve (early man) were not capable of taking responsibility for what they did and it was necessary to coerce them into doing what was "right". Developing the capability of taking responsibility for what we do, is perhaps the main purpose of human life, taking us ever closer to "God" (or the spiritual reality associated with this word). Taking responsibility for what we do often puts us at odds with our lower, animal nature. The shame that Adam and Eve felt because of their nakedness can be understood as being symbolic of the conflict that arose when they became aware of the need to control their sexual desires if they were to take responsibility for the consequences, which before the advent of reliable birth control was the creation of new life. Men have been notoriously reluctant to accept responsibility for their sexual behaviour when they could get get away with it, since their animal nature would have them impregnate as many females as possible. Just as our lower, animal nature is reluctant for us to accept responsibility for our sexual behaviour, it is also reluctant to accept responsibility for many other forms of behaviour, particularly those relating to human relationships and the power we have over other people. While most men's animal nature desires power over certain women in order to copulate with them, because no one can survive, let alone prosper, without the assistance of others, we all strive for the power that will ensure we get it. A baby gets it through the instinctive reactions of it's parents (particularly its mother) and other adults. An adult must secure it by other means. In modern society, by far the important means is MONEY. The creation of Sustainable Society requires above all that we learn to take responsibility for our MONEY - how we make it, how we spend it, and how we invest it. This will entail changing our understanding of and attitude towards MONEY - from one based on our primitive, more animal than human nature to one based on enlightened, human self-interest.
