I can only tell you a few things from my own experience of home schooling my kids. First of all comes a word of caution. If the intention of taking them out of the school is to make them learn their textbooks in a ‘better way’, then it is definitely better to have them continue with their schools. People do home schooling for different reasons. When I talk about it, I mean giving the child a real opportunity to explore himself and his surroundings and learn by the way of living. Basically, it implies discovering his strengths and weaknesses, his interests and disinterests, experiencing the freedom to say no and to make his/her own choices and learn the consequences of his/her actions. This also means the child might not do any thing that we expect him to do for quite some time and then one day find something worthwhile to do. Having accomplished that, the child will experience a fulfillment that is beyond imagination and this might or might not be a turning point in the child’s involvement in academic sense but he is definitely learning by his involvement with the world around him. Here the main concern for me is to let the child choose what is important to him and not just to the people around. It is a question of living your life and letting the child actively participate in it. One can provide a host of rich experiences by getting involved with the child on the issues of child’s interest and those directly related with life and leaving the choice open to the child to decide. In the process of home schooling, to provide a real opportunity to get engaged with process of learning, one needs to be ready to give the child this kind of freedom and to trust the child enough to take control of his life. Learning happens not by cutting their interests down and urging them to do that we the adults want. My children (10 and 5 then) just played cricket and went for walks in the forest for 4-5 months at a stretch without actually sitting down and doing something that we count as ‘academic’. I was very apprehensive but some how mustered patience and faith enough not to interfere. By the end of it, I discovered that they had learnt a whole lot about the countries that play cricket and averages and other mathematical calculations required to fill the score board. I realized that a whole lot of things that we want our children to do come so naturally to them if allow them to explore. And more important than that, they learnt to trust themselves, they discovered their own ways of figuring out a whole lot of things for themselves, they were much more mature in so many other ways by the end of it. It is a question of allowing them to pursue their own interests and in the process learning and discovering for themselves their own priorities and potentials in any given sense. We normally feel children can’t take initiatives for themselves. They can’t think and make choices for themselves because they don’t know. It is a myth. If we give this opportunity to the child right from the beginning, they are pretty comfortable doing so. Today, when my children go to school, they find it so odd when the teacher tells them what to do, and moreover, when and how to do. The child does know what is important to him/her at any given time. It is another thing if the child’s choice doesn’t tally with the choice we might have made for the child. We feel that we need to take important decisions for the child till the child understands what is the right kind of decision. But in the process, we have already made the child dependent on us for thinking for him and now we expect him/her to take decisions, but the child is uncomfortable doing so. This is just one aspect of making decisions as a process of learning. There are many other things like discovering what is important to us, how would we like to go about it, discovering our own learning styles, discovering our faith in ourselves, being sensitive and sensible humans with our originality and creativity intact and so on so forth, we can go on counting all the virtues of life which are not only not addressed but are actually snubbed by our current education system. We do need to educate our children and ourselves and it has been done since the origin of humanity. The big question is how do we do it? Is it to be done by oppression or by really providing them space to grow and discover for themselves? I feel these are some important issues that we must explore before we make any choice for our children and find out for ourselves where do we stand in this whole process. Are we ready to give them that sort of time, patience, freedom and trust? If we take care of some of these basic things while helping our children discover the taste of life, we will eventually be having a generation that will not be bound by any systems and structures existing around. They will primarily be bound by love, compassion, logic, balance within and without, basically the individuals whose feelings and thoughts will not be schooled.
