Forget about socialist economics, there are so many others, including Gandhi's. - Claude Alvares To some extent the answer lies in the very idea of "economics" as a separate discipline which, let's remember, is only a little over two hundred years old. The crucial move in carving out a separate entity called "economics" was to de-link it from morality (after the recent US elections, one hesitates to use that word but still); this can be seen starkly in the passage from Smith's Moral Sentiments to his Wealth of Nations. So the very term "economics" is a way of putting a distance from other kinds of concerns (such as ethics) and of staking out a claim to scientificity. Now, Marxist economics is an example of a rival economics that shared these broad presuppositions and tried to out-compete economics in its scientificity. I think it's safe to say that this was a misguided and failed attempt. There have been other similar attempts such as those of Sraffa and the Cambridge school, and they have not fared much better. Now, when we introduce someone like Gandhi into the equation, we cannot be talking about economics in the sense in which Smith, Marx, and Sraffa use the word. With Gandhi, there is an absolute refusal to countenance any separation between economics and ethics. The fantastic correspondence between Tagore and Gandhi (brought out by Sabyasachi Bhattacharya as "The Mahatma and the Poet" - National Book Trust - 1997) shows how even a mind like Tagore's can go so wrong. The discussion centers around Tagore's disapproval of charkha - a question on which Gandhi refuses to budge, gently reminding Tagore: "I must confess that I do not draw a sharp OR ANY (my emphasis) distinction between ethics and economics." (p.8) Tagore's essay "The Cult of the Charkha" (pp.99-112) and Gandhi's rejoinder "The Poet and the Charkha" (pp. 122-126) should not only be on every economics syllabus in India; in my view, it should be on every reading list that has ever been compiled anywhere. In any event, I suppose what I am adverting to is that any serious rival would have to refuse the very terms of engagement set out by economics: i.e. that we not stray outside the boundaries of efficient production, consumption, and distribution. Then it becomes a question of how much to complicate the picture, and the very first obstacle one runs into is the idea of "development" which most Third World moderns have internalized at some level or other. Europe and North America are the models of course, and Japan the ultimate Asian "success story". And here we run up against the power of a certain kind of fantasy whose very backbone needs to be broken - but how? I think this calls for something more than uncovering the Eurocentrism of mainstream economics or mobilizing our particular indigenous economic knowledges (such as Arthashastra etc.) against it or doing additional critiques of globalization. I have nothing against such critiques, but their appeal and power are limited because of the level of abstraction at which they are pitched. In Kerala, what we have is a concrete instance of far reaching socio-economic changes that were set in motion in the early years of the twentieth century because of a series of powerful ethico-political interventions. In the razzle-dazzle for Europe and Japan, our intellectual elites have either buried the Kerala story, or have treated it as a still developing version of something they are already familiar with. But what happened in Kerala simply cannot be subsumed under the standard development narrative - this is what makes it so interesting. It certainly holds lessons for economics - but an economics that is interwoven with ethics, politics, self, memory, and truth. That, in any case, is what I am arguing. I intend to begin with economics, and to end with economics, but hope to show en route that economic matters are far too important to be left to any discipline that calls itself "economics".
